We cannot upgrade to the version of this software because it does not support Server anymore. We have the licensing for Server R2. What I tried is just upgrading the OS of the server and preserving all of the programs and data. When I tried I got an error saying, "windows 8. Is there anything I can do or am doing wrong? Should I be able to upgrade the server OS from to R2 or is that too far of a leap? I could see that error happening if your Win2K8 is 32 bit.
If you are running x64, you should be able to in place upgrade. Although I would still recommending standing up another VM and migrating. You cannot go from Server to Server R2. Server R2 to R2? Yes, but not plain I've done R2 to R1 and R2 upgrades on VM's a few tiemes without issue, I've run the advisor to see if it detected any gotcha's and then gone on through it.
If I remember correctly - there is no upgrade from 2k8 to , it's a redo just like w7 to w8 there is no upgrade. As suggested, spin up a new server and migrate over. Using a test VM I was able to install Server and some programs office being one of them. I then upgraded to server successfully and after then I upgraded the server OS to Server R2. All of the programs functioned correctly. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question.

Saul Member. So this is what i got when i attempted to upgrade from r2 ent to r2 datacenter. Any idea why and what could i do differently to get the upgrade successful? You can choose to install a new copy of Windows Server Datacenter Evaluation Server with a GUI instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive.
Prajwal Desai Forum Owner Staff member. Here is the table that shows the upgrade options for Windows Server R2. Check and confirm. Thanks for responding, Prajwal. I had seen this table before attempting to upgrade the reason why it surprises me that it's not working for me.

Do you have a link of a recommended version I could try with my license? I am actually using a server I don't need to test the upgrade before upgrade the rest of my servers in production.
What would you generally recommend in order to get the upgrade successful? I appreciate you time in responding to my queston, Prajwal.. Many thanks! Would it be wrong to use the iso I had download and burned on a disc from Microsoft with product key I just purchased? Many thanks, again. Where did you download the ISO from?
